Job Description

Overview:

We are seeking an exceptional, highly experienced, and proactive Governess to provide educational, developmental, and pastoral support for two children aged 4 and 2 within a fully staffed private household. This is primarily a governess and child-development role rather than a traditional nanny position, working closely with the parents, school/nursery, nannies, and wider household team. We are particularly interested in candidates with SEN training or substantial professional experience supporting children with additional learning, behavioural, sensory, attention, or developmental needs. The family travels regularly internationally, so flexibility and extensive travel experience are essential.

Key Responsibilities:

Education & Development

  • Support the children's educational and developmental progress, creating engaging, age-appropriate learning opportunities, including early literacy, phonics, numeracy, and school-readiness skills for the 4-year-old, and developmentally appropriate early learning through play and sensory activities for the 2-year-old.
  • Identify areas where either child may require additional support, select suitable educational resources, and monitor and communicate progress regularly with the parents.

SEN & Behavioural Support

  • Use an SEN-informed approach to support individual learning styles and developmental needs, recognising behavioural triggers and patterns and implementing appropriate, consistent strategies.
  • Help the children develop emotional regulation and coping skills, establish clear and consistent boundaries using positive reinforcement, and liaise with teachers or therapists where required to implement recommended strategies consistently at home.

School & Nursery Support

  • Manage school/nursery preparation and routines, ensuring uniforms, bags, homework, and materials are organised, liaising with teachers and keeping parents informed of important communications or concerns.
  • Support homework, reading, and educational projects, helping establish strong habits around learning, organisation, and responsibility from an early age.

Routine, Manners & Independence

  • Establish and maintain consistent daily routines alongside the children's nannies, encouraging excellent manners, kindness, and age-appropriate social skills, and teaching independence in dressing and daily tasks.
  • Support positive sibling relationships and appropriate conflict resolution, acting as a positive role model at all times.

Activities & Enrichment

  • Research and organise high-quality extracurricular and enrichment opportunities, planning educational outings, museum visits, and cultural, sporting, and arts activities appropriate to each child's age and interests.
  • Balance structured learning with active and imaginative play and downtime, and organise creative activities during school holidays.

Travel

  • Travel extensively with the family internationally as required, maintaining the children's routines, education, and behavioural expectations while travelling, and preparing appropriate educational resources and activities for journeys.
  • Work effectively alongside nannies and other household staff while travelling, remaining highly organised and comfortable with changing schedules and time zones.

Requirements:

  • Fluent/native-level English with excellent spoken and written communication, and significant professional experience as a Governess, SEN Governess, teacher, early-years educator, or highly educational nanny.
  • Strong knowledge of early childhood development, early literacy, phonics, numeracy, and school readiness, with experience working with children aged approximately 2–5 years.
  • Confident and experienced with behaviour management; warm, patient, and nurturing while maintaining firm and consistent boundaries.
  • Highly organised, proactive, and comfortable working within a fully staffed UHNWI household, with experience travelling internationally with private families and flexibility regarding changing schedules.
  • Excellent discretion and understanding of confidentiality, current paediatric First Aid/CPR certification, and excellent references and background checks.
  • Highly desirable: SEN qualification or substantial SEN experience, including supporting children with ADHD traits, attention difficulties, sensory-processing differences, or emotional regulation challenges.
  • Highly desirable: Qualified teacher status, Early Years qualification, CACHE Level 3+, Montessori or Norland training, psychology/child-development background, and prior experience within a high-profile or UHNWI household.
